The High Commission of India in Nigeria on Tuesday in Abuja honoured some outstanding Nigerian women as part of activities to mark the 2023 International Womens Day celebration.

Gangandharan Balasubramanian, Indian High Commissioner to Nigeria, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the event was organised to celebrate and give awards to distinguished Nigerian and Indian women from various fields.

NAN reports that the International Womens Day is celebrated annually on March 8, in honour of womens achievements, raise awareness about discrimination and take action to drive gender parity.

The High Commissioner said the event was organised on March 7, so as to have all the stakeholders on board to herald the Day.

The International Womens Day is celebrated all over the world and we have so many achievers here in Nigeria.

So the high commission considered it appropriate to recognise and celebrate the achievements of these great women on this special day, he said.

NAN reports that four outstanding Nigerian women were honoured from various fields ranging from Health, Politics, Diplomacy and Medicine.

While three Indian women residing in Nigeria were also recognised from the Business, Education and Culture sectors.

The Nigerians honoured include Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, Director General, National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), Mrs Abike Dabiri-Erewa, CEO Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM).

Others are Amb. Janet Olisa, Director overseeing Office of the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Mrs Maimuna Habib, Chief Veterinary Officer of Nigeria.

Adeyeye after receiving her award stressed the importance of women to home and nation building while calling for more women in places of authority.

The Indian women honoured are Ms Ritu Sahajwalla, MD Greenville Liquefied Natural Gas Company Ltd, Ms Sonali Gupta, Principal India Language School, Lagos and Ms Hamisha Abuja, a movie Director/Producer.

Balasubramanian highlighted the immense contributions of women to nation building in both countries and stressed the need for gender equality.

The 2023 International Womens Day has as its theme DigitALL: Innovation and technology for gender equality.

The Association of Women Town Planners in Nigeria (AWTPN), has called for gender equity and focus on girl-child education as the nation celebrates the 2023 International Womens Day celebration.

Mrs Bukola Bello, AWTPN Chairperson, made the call on Wednesday, in Abuja at an event by the association to commemorate the Day.

This years International Womens Day presents an opportunity to celebrate, discuss and embrace Equity: equal opportunities are no longer enough but Equity should be the order of the day.

There is also the need to engage more women in governance and administrations as well as to empower and invest in the girl-child with a view to achieving equality and equity in all directions for a better society, she said.

Bello specifically called for the implementation of the 35 per cent affirmative action for gender inclusion in all states and the Federation.

She said the association would continue to lead the campaign of catching the girl-child young through frequent sensitisation programmes in secondary schools.

Earlier, Mrs Oluwayinka Bello, Chairperson AWTPN, FCT chapter, said the Day was meant to celebrate the social, economic, cultural and political achievement of women to nation building.

This celebration (marked on March 8) is another call to power on efforts to make the digital world safer, more inclusive, more equitable and create a better future not just for women and girls but for all humanity, she said.

NCWS National President, Hajiya Lami Lau

The National Council of Women Societies (NCWS) has urged stakeholders in the technology industry to mainstream women into the sector for gender equality.

The National President of NCWS, Hajiya Lami Lau, said this in a statement on Tuesday in commemoration of the 2023 International Womens Day (IWD).

The theme of this years edition is: DigitALL: Innovation and technology for gender equality.

Lau said that the United Nations observance of the IWD recognises and celebrates the women and girls who were championing the advancement of transformative technology and digital education.

She said that bringing women and other marginalised groups into technology results in more creative solutions and had greater potential for innovations that meet womens needs and promote gender equality.

The non inclusion of women comes with massive costs and according to the UN Women 2022 Snap Short Report, womens exclusion from the digital world had reduced one trillion dollars from the GDP of low- and middle-income countries in the last decade.

This loss will grow to .5 trillion by 2025 if no action is taken to mainstream women in digital world,, she said.

Lau said that to change this situation will require tackling the problem of online violence, which according to the reports, 38 per cent of women had personally experienced.

The national president stressed the need for digital education that could increase the awareness of women and girls regarding their rights and civic engagement in the sector.

She called for the adoption of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) courses by girls to address the discrimination, gender bias and improve participation in all spheres.

Lau said that the celebration of the IWD 2023 would explore the impact of the digital gender gap on widening economic and social inequalities.

This, she said, would also highlight the importance of protecting the rights of women and girls in digital spaces and addressing online and ICT-facilitated gender-based violence. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

The Goodluck Jonathan Foundation has called on government and other stakeholders to address structural biases against women and girls in order to build an equitable and peaceful society.

Executive Director of the Foundation, Ms Ann Iyonu, gave the advice in a statement in Abuja on Tuesday to mark this years International Womens Day.

Iyonu said that 2023 celebrations called for urgent action towards eliminating gender violence as well as the need for increased investment in technology for women and girls.

She said that Nigerian women had been making significant contributions toward sustainable development of the country.

It is therefore timely for governments across levels to initiate policies and programmes that will address the systemic biases against women.

She said that the foundation acknowledged and appreciated the strides and notable contributions of women toward sustainable development and nation building.

This years theme DigitALL: Innovation and technology for gender equality, highlights the need for increased investment in technology for girls and women in our society.

It is also an urgent task to ensure that violence against women both online and offline are addressed.

On International Womens Day 2023, we renew our call for an inclusive society, one that is just, equitable, devoid of bias and discrimination.

Gov. Babajide Sanwo-olu taking pictures with some traders in Lagos

Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State on Tuesday embarked on campaign tour of major markets populated by people from the South-East.

Sanwo-Olu took a tour of the markets ahead of the Saturday gubernatorial election, following the open endorsement for his re-election by Ndigbo community in the state.

It was a rousing welcome for Sanwo-Olu at an open forum organised by traders, under the aegis of the Auto Spare Parts And Machinery Dealers Association (ASPAMDA), in Trade Fair Complex, Ojo.

The governor at the open forum pledged to ensure safety of the businesses and properties of Ndigbo in Lagos State.

Besides, Sanwo-Olu met an amalgamation of Igbo traders across 58 major markets in Lagos. The traders, under the aegis of Ndigboamaka Progressive Markets Association, unanimously backed the governors re-election.

The governor also had interaction with traders at the popular mobile phone, computer and other electronics market (Computer Village) in Ikeja.

The engagements were initiated in response to concerns raised over safety of businesses and properties owned by South-East traders in Lagos.

Sanwo-Olu allayed the fears of the Igbo traders, assuring them that Lagos would continue to be a melting pot for all Nigerians.

He said his administration would continue to foster security and promote peaceful coexistence among all ethnic nationalities in the state.

I am here on a solidarity visit and to thank you for your public endorsement of my humble self, which I believe will be reflected at the polls on Saturday with the highest number of votes cast from members of your community.

You are not giving us your support for anything; you believe we deserve this encouragement because my team and I have worked tirelessly to improve your well-being.

He assured the Igbo traders of his governments commitment to their prosperity, adding that the approval recently received by the state for development of Badagry Seaport was to facilitate economic development and boost logistics, especially in the movement of goods.

Sanwo-Olu pledged his administrations commitment to the safety and security of non-indigenes living in Lagos, urging the Igbo traders not to listen to the scaremongers threatening to attack them because of their electoral choices.

We will continue to work with your leadership to enhance cooperation and identify areas we can improve on to foster peace and stability. We will not be hostile to any community of non-indigenes.

For as long as you conduct yourselves in a peaceful manner, your safety and security will remain our priority. There is no need for any law-abiding resident to be scared, he said.

ASPAMDA President, Chief Ngozi Emechebe, described Sanwo-Olu as a true friend of Igbo, noting that the governor had never been hostile to non-Yoruba residents living in the state.

Emechebe said that the forum was initiated as a re-assurance of support of the Ndigbo community to the governors re-election, saying that the traders would work for Sanwo-Olus electoral victory in their respective polling stations.

Sanwo-Olu is a good man and has demonstrated that he is a lover of Igbo. We have resolved to support the governor for second term because of his performance and his economic policies that have supported our businesses.

The Head of Personal Banking, Ecobank Nigeria, Korede Demola-Adeniyi, says investing in and developing women contribute to the development of the economic and human resources in Africa.

According to her, this is also important to adopting financial integration across the continent.

Demola-Adeniyi, who spoke to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on telephone as the world marks the 2023 International Womens Day (IWD) on Wednesday, said that women should be supported to achieve gender parity in all spheres.

NAN reports that the IWD is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women.

The United Nations theme for 2023 IWD is: DigitALL: Innovation and technology for gender equality.

Demola-Adeniyi also stressed the need for empowerment and financial self-sufficiency for women.

If you develop a woman, you develop the resources which is the human resources in Africa.

This is important because you will be developing economically and also be working to adopt financial integration across the continent.

Women make the continent one of the highest in terms of women entrepreneurs across the world.

Again, Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) account for up to 90 percent of all businesses in Africa, and women own about a third of all these registered African SMEs.

We have one in four female adults in Africa who manage or start a business.

To show the dedication toward empowering women and female-owned businesses, Demola-Adeniyi said that Ecobank had put in place offerings aimed at bridging the financing gap for African Women entrepreneurs.

We have been able to use our flagship programme called Ellevate by Ecobank, dedicated to supporting female entrepreneurs.

We have also recorded success stories in this area in countries where we operate.

The Ecobank by Ellevate is aimed to bridge the gap, the financing gap for African Womens entrepreneurs, and what we aim to do is to up skill them to be more effective and efficient in running their businesses.

And that makes us kind of different from other brands for women supporting women businesses.

Also, under the Ellevate Equip, we have been able to build training and capacity platform for the Ellevate initiative.

According to her, success stories have been recorded in Sierra Leone, where a dynamic freight forwarding and delivery company, was initially supported with an Ellevate contract financing facility.

She said the organisation had also partnered with the Global Business School Network to organise a leadership programme for 35 of their top ellevate customers in 2022 with pioneering graduating class was actuall y made up of participants from Cameroon, Ghana, Kenya, Liberia, Malawi, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Uganda, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.

This was more in line with our African footprints.

The participants benefited immensely from the world class faculty from the MIT global programme, INSEAD Africa Initiative and INSEAD Gender Initiative, the American University of Cairo School of Business, Stanford SEED and the University of Cape Town Graduate School of Business

She said the bank had also successfully handled flagship MSME training financing programme for over 4,000 African MSMEs, 30 per cent being women, under part of the SME booster series.

In Kenya and Ghana, she said that Ecobank also supported women through their offerings.

In Nigeria, she said that projects had also been put in place to ensure that female customers had access to financial services.

We have a KYC Light Account opening whereby a woman in the rural area can just use the phone and dial *326; automatically you have an account.

So, it helps us to at least introduce them into the digital world and ensure that they can start banking from there, she told NAN.

According to Demola-Adeniyi , since the launch of Ellevate, the organisation has dedicated at least 10 per cent of the commercial banking portfolio loan book to women.

And since we launched Ellevate two years ago, we have on boarded over 50,000 customers.

We have extended loans up to 188 million dollars and attracted deposits of 465 million dollars.

She also noted that the partnership between Ecobank Foundation and the UN Womens Regional Office for Western and Central Africa, was also a laudable initiative to develop the continent.

This established a framework for cooperation that would enable achievement of the common goals and accelerate the empowerment of women in Africa.

Particularly, were going to be paying attention to the specific needs and challenges faced by women and women entrepreneurs in both the rural and the urban areas.

And one of the specific things we have said is that we are going to work together to combat violence against women and girls, and also encourage women to take part in sports.

It is a partnership in the right direction and will also strengthen women empowerment.

The U.S. Ambassador to Nigeria, Mary Beth Leonard, says it will be important for the future of the country that Nigerians do not let their differences divide them.

According to her, legally established process for resolving challenges to the election should be allowed to take its course

In an Op-ED titled: The Elections of February 25, Leonard said that the people of Nigeria demonstrated their dedication to democracy on Feb. 25.

However, that there were many angry and frustrated Nigerians just as there were many celebrating victories they believed were hard-fought and well-earned.

In the coming days, it will be important for the future of this country that Nigerians not let their differences divide them.

And that the legally established process for resolving challenges to the election be allowed to take its course.

We commend Mr Obi and Mr Abubakar for their recent statements committing to take this path, and Mr Tinubu, who INEC declared the president-elect under Nigerias electoral framework, for acknowledging their right to do so.

The United States is no stranger to election-related controversy and conflict.

As much as it can be unsatisfying to end an electoral process in a courtroom, in a constitutional democracy bound by the rule of law, that is where electoral conflicts may appropriately conclude.

She said it was clear that the electoral process as a whole on Feb. 25 failed to meet Nigerians expectations.

As I said numerous times prior to the elections, Nigeria has accomplished much in just the two-plus decades since the return to democracy, and a gradual improvement in the quality of its elections in that time constitutes one of those accomplishments.

We recognise that Nigerians want that positive trend to continue, including through the use of new technology intended to make the process of reporting results more transparent.

We, thus, reiterate our call on INEC to address promptly the challenges that can be resolved ahead of the March 11 gubernatorial elections.

And to undertake a broader review of the problems that transpired during the last elections and what can be done to fix them.

In all cases, INEC should share with the Nigerian public information about the actions it is taking.

She highlighted some of the remarkable results from the past election that showed how Nigerias political landscape was indisputably changing.

In more than half of the states 20 the winning candidate represented a different party than that of the incumbent governor.

Twelve of these states are led by APC governors. For the first time, four presidential candidates won at least one state, and the top three each won 12 states based on these initial results.

In the National Assembly elections, even with results still incomplete, we already know that changes are afoot.

Seven sitting governors lost in their attempts to win election to the Assembly; the Labor Party has won at least seven seats in the Senate; the NNPP has won at least 11 seats in the House of Representatives.

She said that the Nigerian people had made clear their desire for responsive and inclusive governance, and that the U.S. strongly supported the ability to express that desire.

The United States and Nigeria are the two largest presidential democracies in the world, and longtime partners.

The National Directorate of Employment (NDE) on Monday commenced a five-day training for 1,235 graduates under the NDE-Enterprise and Finance Counseling Clinic (NDE-efcc).

Malam Abubakar Fikpo, Director General, NDE, disclosed this at the opening ceremony of the training in Yola.

Fikpo, represented by Mr Nuhu Bello, Acting Adamawa State Coordinator, said the training was simultaneously taking place in Anambra, Bayelsa, Cross River, Delta, Edo, Gombe, Imo, Kebbi, Kogi, Kwara, Lagos, Ogun, Osun, Plateau, Sokoto and Taraba states.

In all, a total of 1,235 participants have been selected from 18 states at the rate of 65 participants per state.

The concept of the NDE-efcc was borne out of the desire to provide opportunity for business persons facing challenges to obtain solutions through experience sharing with other businessmen.

Or through counseling sessions with the established business persons that are part of the facilitators of the training, he said.

According to him, the clinic also seeks to guide them in solid business management.

He called on the participants to take advantage of the opportunity before them to succeed in life, as there were several persons without white collar jobs.

Ms Chikodi Ike, Head, Small Scale Enterprise, NDE Abuja said, the training developed as part of the effort of the NDE to equip unemployed graduates of tertiary institutions.

Ike, represented by Ms Aishatu Aliyu, Enterprise Development Officer (EDO) of the scheme, said that the training would enhance their capacity to succeed in the chosen businesses.

Mrs Naamar Jonnah, HOD Small Scale Enterprise, NDE Adamawa, congratulated the beneficiaries and advised them to actively participate throughout the training to acquired business skills.

She encouraged them to also be entrepreneurs and contribute to the socio-economic development of the state and county at large.

Mr Bello Ishaq, who spoke on behalf of the participants, appreciated the Federal Government for the opportunity, and gave assurance that they would do their best and be employers of labour in their communities.

Prof. Olalekan Akinbo, Expert Supervisor at Centre for Excellence in Science, Technology and Innovation (STI), African Union Development Agency (AUDA-NEPAD) says STI hold key solutions to curbing poverty and economic development challenges.

Akinbo spoke on the role of STI to national development in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Monday.

STI have been central in the progress and development of virtually all the nations of the world, contributing immensely to all sectors of the economy.

STI are intimately connected with development because they have a historical record of bringing advances that have led to healthier, longer, wealthier and more productive lives.

They are key ingredients to solutions to the most serious poverty alleviation and economic development challenges that we currently face and are likely to face in the future, he said.

According to him, STI has been central in the progress made till date in the fight against poverty and in stimulating economic growth.

Akinbo said that advances in STI were in many ways the ultimate global for good public use, adding, because once discovered, their benefits could be extended to additional users at little or no marginal costs.

He said in most basic and critical areas of human needs, STI have made significant progress till date, and that they hold the best prospects for continued progress, particularly in respect to agriculture, health, energy among others.

Underscoring STIs role in agriculture, the NEPAD Expert said advances in STI had facilitated higher yields, greater efficiency and nutritional content in the worlds food supply.

He added: Food production, however, must double in the coming decades to meet rising demand and challenges entailed in inter alia improving resistance to drought, pests, salinity and temperature extremes.

Akinbo also mentioned raising the nutritional content and reducing post-harvest losses all in an environmentally and socially sustainable manner.

At the same time, the regulatory challenges of assuring safety in food production and consumption will increase exponentially, he said.

Accordingly, he said that although the necessary technology for increasing agricultural output was available in many developing countries including Nigeria, certain requisites were to be met.

Akinbo said these requisites were the will to advance economically, opportunity and organisation to use technology, elimination of political, social and economic obstacles to development, among others.

Explaining further, he said in the area of food security, advances in STI provided the foundation for the green revolution, and also allowed food prices to remain at historical lows for the past decades.

He stated that improved knowledge of plant biology and breeding techniques led to better seeds and cultivation practices that drastically increased yields.

In the area of economic growth and rural development, Akinbo said STI were tragically important.

He said for many years, policy makers had suspected a close link between economic growth and productive investment in STI, and that now mounting evidence supported this.

He said firstly, since the industrial revolution, developed countries have had the most STI capacity and have been the ones to grow fastest.

From 1870 to the present, scientifically and technologically advanced countries have become increasingly wealthy, and their rates of growth have not diminished over the years.

Second, returns to rural development have been shown to be consistently positive and high in countries where science and technology were properly established, Akinbo said.

He added that in such cases, there was always a correlation between innovation and growth. (NAN)()

The philanthropist who is the Deputy Director of the Councils Fundraising Committee of the APC Presidential Campaign Council (PCC), described Tinubus victory as well deserved.

I write on behalf of my wife, Mrs Elizabeth Jack-Rich, members of the PCC from Rivers State, and the entire APC family in the state, to felicitate with you and the Vice President-elect over your victory.

It is a well-deserved victory and it was a keenly contested presidential election, he said.

President Muhammadu Buhari has joined leaders and members of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) in celebrating the General Overseer, Pastor Enoch Adeboye, on his 81st birthday.

In a congratulatory message by his spokesman, Mr Femi Adesina, on Thursday in Abuja, Buhari rejoiced with the religious leader, who left his academic career to fully commit to serving the Lord.

The president equally felicitated family, friendsand other church leaderswithin and outside the country, thankful for Adeboyes positive influence on people and institutions, with a focus on expanding the kingdom of God on earth.

While recalling the visits and prayers, especially when he was ill and recuperating, Buhari said he remained grateful for the friendliness and wise counsels of the General Overseer over many years.

The president prayed that the God would continue to bless and guide Adeboye and his family.

In a similar development, President Buhari shared the joy of the milestone with renowned journalist, Alhaji Liad Tella, who turns 75 March 3, 2023.

The president noted that over five decades, Tella had invested in journalism, rising to the top of his career as Deputy Editor of National Concord, and Editor-in-Chief of The Monitor Newspapers.

He also celebrated Tellas contribution to knowledge as Senior Research Fellow, Department of Mass Communication, University of Ilorin, and his commitment to Islam.

Tella was one of the founding fathers of Muslim Students Society of Nigeria (MSSN), and a Federal Commissioner at the National Hajj Commission, for many years.

Buhari rejoiced with the Tella family, the media community, especially the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ), the Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE), and the Newspapers Proprietors Association of Nigeria (NPAN).

Malam Garba Shehu, the Presidents spokesman in a statement on Saturday in Abuja, said this development followed an invitation by the Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani.

The conference, which is from March 5 to 9, under the theme: holds once in a decade.

It provides an opportunity to garner the support of the international community for accelerating sustainable development in the LDCs as well as assist them make progress towards achieving prosperity.

According to Shehu, while in Doha, Buhari will reinforce Nigerias commitment to support the most vulnerable countries to meet their development challenges.

The presidential aide revealed that the president would also highlight areas through which the Nigerian government had provided them with various forms of assistance over time.

As most of these countries struggle to find sustainable solutions to challenges of poverty, adverse effects of climate change, food and energy crisis as well as high-debt burden among others, the Nigerian leader will vigorously reiterate the need for sustainable solutions for countries facing these severe challenges.

The Summit will be attended by world leaders, the private sector, civil society and youth organisations.

It aims to share developmental ideas and mobilise political will, solidarity, action and solutions to transform the LDCs, by finding sustainable solutions to the challenges of poverty, food insecurity, hunger and weak or non-existent infrastructure.

The summit will also address the challenges of inadequate health facilities, climate change among others as they struggle to deliver on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030.

The presidents delegation includes some ministers and top government officials who are expected to use the opportunity of the visit to sign some agreements and Memoranda of Understanding with the Qatari government.

NYSC members

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Coordinator in Oyo State, Mr Abel Odoba, says the development and unity of Nigeria rests heavily on the youth of the country.

Odoba spoke on Thursday, in Ibadan, at the passing out ceremony of the 2022 Batch A Stream II corps members.

He reminded the corps members that nation building remained the core mandate of the one-year mandatory national service they have undergone.

The coordinator commended them for their meaningful contributions to their host communities and their initiatives of executing various community-oriented projects and making positive impact.

Odoba charged them not to be deterred by the current situation of the country, but to take up leadership roles that would enhance the advancement of the nation.

You must be disciplined and always exhibit such, because without discipline, you cant be good leaders, he said.

The coordinator also advised them to utilise the training they had received through NYSC to change the narratives of disunity among members of the diverse ethnic groups.
He implored them to make the unity of the country their priority and duty wherever they found themselves after their disengagement from service.

Odoba, while encouraging them on entrepreneurship and self actualisation, said that the world had become more entrepreneurial, making white collar jobs less attractive.

NYSC places emphasis on self-reliance and wealth creation; I therefore urge the outgoing corps members to put into practice all they have learnt.

They should explore all the facilities available to them for start-up capital from various financial institutions the NYSC is partnering with through the Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development Programme, he said.

The coordinator advised the outgoing corps members to apply necessary acumen, right ideals and stay focused in their chosen career, business or other human endeavours.

Odoba said this was necessary to propel them to greater heights in the interest of the nation and themselves.

He enjoined them to be good ambassadors of the scheme, their families, and their various institutions of learning.

Flying Eagles celebrating their defeat of Uganda at Under-20 AFCON

The Flying Eagles of Nigeria on Thursday in Ismailia beat Uganda 1-0 to qualify for the semi-finals of the ongoing FIFA Under-20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Egypt.

The Nigerian under-20 male national football team also in the process qualified for the 23rd FIFA Under-20 World Cup finals scheduled for Indonesia from May 20 to June 12.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that in the second quarter-final match of the 17th Under-20 AFCON, the Flying Eagles had to battle hard all throughout the game.

They were rewarded with an own goal scored by Ugandan midfielder Ibrahim Juma in the 30th minute of the game at the Suez Canal Authority Stadium.

Goalkeeper Chijioke Aniagboso, who captained in the absence of the suspended Daniel Bameyi, did well to keep his team in the game before and after the goal.

As early as in the 10th minute, he had to enact a reflex save to stop a bullet header from a corner-kick.

Both teams continued to frisk for opportunities, with Nigerias Ibrahim Muhammad and Haliru Sarki probing deep.

But they were undone mostly by inaccurate passes and poor ball-holding in the final quarter of the game.

However, Muhammad who scored one of the goals which sank Mozambique on the final day of Group A helped his team to get it right by the half hour.

He latched onto a long ball on the left flank from the defence, controlled well and fired, an effort which saw the ball hitting the near post behind the goalkeeper.

The balls return into the goal area saw it richochetting off defender Juma into his own net for the only goal of the match.

Muhammad should have made it two to give Nigeria a cruise only four minutes after the restart, but he put too much power behind his turn and shot.

On the hour mark and seven minutes after, Aniagboso, however, saved point-blank efforts to sustain Nigerias lead.

Also, in the 80th minute, Samson Lawal pushed the ball away from goal from a free-kick 22 yards away.

NAN reports that victory has now earned Nigeria a slot in Mondays semi-finals as well as a ticket to Indonesia.

NLC President, Mr Joe Ajaero

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) says it will continue to get involved in politics in order to bring matters surrounding the welfare of workers to the front burner of programmes and policies of government.

The NLC President, Mr Joe Ajaero, made the assertion during courtesy visits to some labour unions in Lagos on Thursday.

The unions include National Union of Electricity Employees; National Union of Banks, Insurance and Financial Institutions, as well as Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers.

Ajaero said that the labour movement owned the Labour Party (LP).

According to him, LP is a party that has the ideology of the working class movement with its charter of workers demands.

We have an era that we are entering: era of politics, and we will not shy away.

The Nigeria Labour Congress will be involved in politics; we are already involved in politics; NLC had a political party: the Labour Party (LP), and LP participated in the recent elections.

Nigeria must exist before we practice our unionism; anybody, who emerges as the President of Nigeria will work with us, and the rights and privileges of the workers must be guaranteed.

The current wage system, casualisation policy, and outsourcing are anti-worker; with such policies, we cant be our brothers keepers, he said.

The labour leader encouraged union members to show interest in politics, saying, we have not been managing it by ourselves; we have been allowing people from outside to now answer LP.

He urged members to continue enlightening workers in the country about the LP.

That is what we are going to impose on them; even the ones that have emerged as senators or House of Representatives members, they must, as a necessity, meet with us and we will give them our programmes.

That is the whole essence of thinking of LP in the first place; so that their actions, inactions, and utterances will reflect the affairs of the labour movement, and there should be no pretences about it.

We are not saying that people cannot belong to any party of their choice, but we have a party where whatever we discuss here, we take it there as workers.

Where, if we want new minimum wage, we take it to the people that represent us there; all these issues concern the workers, and we should no longer shy away from it, Ajaero said.

In his remarks, the President, NUEE, Mr Martin Uzoegwu, said that the decision of the NLC president to undertake the courtesy visit could not have come at a better time.

Uzoegwu said: Within a few days of your assumption of office as NLC president, your impact resonates across the nation through your unequivocal position on the ongoing Nigeria national elections, emphasising against subverting the will of the people; serious engagement of state governments who have denied workers their rights and the release of locked congress secretariat in a state, just to mention a few. Gov. Abubakar Bello of Niger has inaugurated the N779million Hydroelectric Power Producing Areas Development Commission (HYPPADEC) 160 housing units for flood victims in the state.

Bello, at the event in Mokwa and Edati Local Government Areas of the state on Friday, said that the victims in Muregi and Ketso communities would be the beneficiaries of the scheme.

The state government in conjunction with the local governments will setup a committee that will be saddled with the responsibility of relocating victims in the two communities as soon as this project is completed.

Efforts like this will guarantee the safety of lives and properties in our communities.

It is my hope that this project will be completed within the shortest possible time so that efforts will be made to relocate the flood victims in Muregi and Ketso, he said.

He assured the people that the state government would provide access roads to the two communities to ease movement of goods and services in the areas.

The Governor said that the electrification project of the communities would soon be completed and inaugurated to boost socio-economic activities in the areas.

Similarly, Alhaji Abubakar Yelwa, Managing Director, HYPPADEC said that, each of this housing units is estimated at the cost of N4,870,161.14.

Following intensive needs assessment and professional survey by HYPPADEC, the commission decided to construct 120 housing units in Muregi town of Mokwa local government area and 40 housing units in Ketso village of Edati local government area.

Yelwa said that each of the housing unit has two bedrooms, one sitting room, one convenience, one kitchen and one veranda.

He said that each housing unit shall occupy half of the plot size allocated to it, while the remaining half shall be left for future expansions.

The Managing Director said that to ensure accessibility to the buildings and prevent flooding, the commission would construct access roads and earth drainages at the site.

He said that the entire project would be carried out using efficient and sustainable construction materials, under the supervision of the commissions Directorate of Engineering and Technical Services.

He said that each of the housing unit would be occupied by persons that have been facing intermittent displacement as a result of floods and other ecological disasters.

Yelwa explained that the choice of Muregi and Ketso for the project was predicated on the fact that the communities have suffered frequent flooding since 2015.

He said that the project would be completed within three months as the contractor had been mobilised.

The Managing Director appreciated the state government, governing council and management of the commission for their support in realising the project.

Also, Alhaji Yahaya Abubakar, Etsu Nupe and Chairman of the state council of traditional rulers, promised the support of the traditional institution to enable the project succeed.

Earlier, Alhaji Abdullahi Muregi, Chairman Mokwa local government area, commended the state government and HYPPADEC for the gesture.

Muregi appealed to the state government to find a way of settling the crisis ravaging Zakagi community in council to prevent the loss of lives and properties.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the housing resettlement scheme would cover the six HYPPADEC states of Benue, Kebbi, Kogi, Kwara, Niger and Plateau.

Mr Mustapha Ahmed, the Director-General, National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has appreciated the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Centre (KSrelief) for its continuous donation to the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in the country.

He expressed the appreciation when he received a team from the KSrelief centre on Thursday in Abuja.

Ahmed, who commended the humanitarian agency for announcing its plans to provide further relief donations to the IDPs in Borno, Yobe and Kano State, lauded the centre for its past support to IDPs in Borno, Yobe and Zamfara.

He said that the gesture was an evidence of friendship and brotherhood between Nigeria and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

The director-general assured that NEMA would continue to ensure proper distribution of the relief items meant for the target beneficiaries, especially those affected by disasters in the country.

He, however, appealed that the centre extended its support to the country, especially to those impacted by the 2022 flood disaster which ravaged many communities.

Also speaking, Hajiya Fatima Kasim, Director, Planning, Research and Forecasting in the Agency, said that a total of 7,750 households had been profiled to benefit from the lastest food donation from the centre.

Connected Development (CODE)and its partners, have tasked the Independent National Electoral Commission(INEC) to address challenges experienced during the Feb. 25 election, ahead of the Governorship and Houses of Assembly Election.

Hamzat Lawal, Chief Executive Officer, CODE, who spoke on behalf of the group said this when he presented the interim statement on the process and conduct the presidential and National Assembly elections in Abuja on Thursday.

Lawal said that the group deployed observers in polling units across the 774 Local Government Areas (LGAs ) of the country as well as the Federal Capital Territory, saying that the findings raised concerns about the management of the election.

Lawal tasked INEC on swift deployment and early opening of polls, professional conduct of security personnel and INECs strict adherence to the use of the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS).

He said that the BVAS should be used for biometric accreditation and electronic transmission of results from polling unit as stipulated by the Electoral Act 2022 and INEC 2023 Election guidelines for the conduct of election.

The Governorship and State Assembly election is yet another opportunity for INEC to redeem her image, and earn the trust and confidence of the electorates in our electoral process.

More importantly, INEC should ensure transparency of the result management and collation process and make certain that polling unit results are uploaded timely on the INEC Result Viewing Portal (IREV).

The Uzabe election observation mission was focused on the election days process; focusing on the quality of the election, with the notion that if the process is right, the outcome will be right and accepted by all.

Drawing from these observations, CODE and her partners conclude that the 2023 Presidential and National Assembly Election failed to meet the basic threshold of a credible election, as it failed short of Citizens expectations, INECs assurances, and benchmark of international election best practice, Lawal said.

He said that the interim statement brought to light some of the discrepancies observed like delay in commencement of polls, low adherence to Electoral laws and slow or non upload of results among others.(NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

The Minister of Women Affairs, Mrs Pauline Tallen, says womens exclusion from the digital world has reduced one trillion dollars from the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of low and middle income countries.

Tallen said at a news conference in Abuja on Thursday, ahead of the commemoration of the 2023 International Womens Day (IWD) that this occurred over the last decade.

The theme of this years edition is: DigitALL: Innovation and technology for gender equality.

According to her, bringing women and other marginalised groups into technology has greater potential for innovations that meet womens needs and promote gender equality.

The lack of women inclusion, by contrast, comes with massive costs and according to the UN Women 2022 Snap Short Report, womens exclusion from the digital world.

This has reduced one trillion dollars from the GDP of low- and middle-income countries in the last decade.
This loss will grow to .5 trillion by 2025 without action.

Reversing this trend according to the report will require tackling the problem of online violence, which 38 per cent of women had personally experienced, she said.

The minister stressed the need for gender-responsive approach to innovation, technology and digital education that could increase the awareness of women and girls regarding their rights and civic engagement.

She also called for the adoption of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) courses by girls to address discrimination, gender bias and improve participation in all spheres.

I therefore ask that, teachers and educational institutions be supported to consciously remove gender biases and stereotypes in our educational environments, textbooks and didactic materials.

It starts with making womens contributions to STEM visible, including through connecting young women and girls with STEM professionals and mentors, she said.

Also, Mr Marthias Schumale, UN resident Coordinator, said they would enhance involvement of women and girls in technology to increase gender inclusion.

We will continue to invest into technology. And as we do that, we will prioritise women and girls because collectively we can make the world of technology and innovation inclusive by working together, he said.

Ms Uller Mueller, UNFPA Country Representative, harped on the role technology plays to expand networks, opportunities, and minds.

Mueller, represented by Ms Erika Goldson, UNFPA Deputy Representative, however, noted that technology was increasingly misused and weaponised, with women and girls disproportionately targeted.

This can take the form of image-based abuse, sextortion, harassment, hate speech, cyberbullying and doxing.

Data tell us that 97 per cent of girls between 11 to16 years in Nigeria have experienced unwanted sexual approaches in chat rooms, social networking sites or emails.

Over 7.89 per cent of this group have been sent sexual images or content, 57 per cent of women have had their videos or images online abused or misused, she said.

She added that UNFPA was developing safety and ethics guidelines for practitioners designing technology for gender-based violence prevention and response.

Mueller said that technology companies are engaged to involve women in design processes from the outset.

Technology is essential to advancing gender equality. When women and girls can access and use technology safely, they can amplify their voices and exercise their agency and autonomy.

This is giving them a platform that can transform their future and ours, she said.

Also, Prof. Ibrahim Pantami, Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, said they would train 200 women on ICT and digital economy in March to reduce the gender gap in technology innovation.

Pantami was represented by Mrs Iklima Musa, Special Assistant to the minister on Strategy and Innovation.

Ms Kemisola Bolarinwa, President, Women in ICT Foundation, launched the prototype of a Smart Bra Device to detect abnormalities like cancer cells.

Bolarinwa also added that they invented a wrist watch and necklace to track movement, in a bid to curb insecurity, particularly kidnapping. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

Nigerian businessmen and women have urged the government of Pakistan to entrench the ease of doing business to strengthen bilateral relations between the two nations.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Nigerian delegation had a meeting the sidelines of the ongoing 2nd edition of the Engineering and Healthcare Show (EHCS) holding in Lahore.

The Nigerian delegates said this at a meeting with the Special Assistant (SA) to the Prime Minister on Commerce, Mr Malik Ghulam, when he met with the businessmen and the Nigerian community in Pakistan.

NAN also reports that, EHCS was organised by the Trade Development Authority of Pakistan (TDAP) and the Ministry of Commerce of Pakistan.

NAN reports that during the meeting some of the businessmen urged Pakistan to create a platform where they can make payments with a relative ease, adding that the protocol of business transaction was difficult.

Other speakers said the prices of pharmaceuticals products were high and urged the government to subsidise the rates of the pharmaceutical products.

Mr Ibrahim Musa, the Managing Director, IBM Investment and the Leader of the Nigerian delegation to EHCS event said: When the government addresses these challenges, the outcome of both countries achievements would be commendable.

He added that the Nigerian pharmaceutical businessmen mostly dealt with pharmaceuticals products from China and India.

Musa said: Jf the government will see to the price reduction of the pharmaceutical products we will patronise Pakistani products.

We have a huge take-over, our people mainly deal with Indians and China and we believe that Pakistan is known for quality products and that is why we want to shift our market from India and China to Pakistan.

But, our basic problem is price challenges and some are saying that the government of India and China used to assist the manufactures by subsidising their prices.

So, we need Pakistani government to do the needful to assist business people to beat the prices in order to penetrate the Nigerian market for all parties to benefit immensely.

Musa also sought the support of the government of Pakistan to collaborate in setting up joint pharmaceutical factories in Nigeria to boost both countries existing bilateral relations.

Responding, the SA to the Prime Minister on Commerce, Mr Ghalum, assured the Nigerian delegation that TDAP would look into their concerns as it was the purpose of the expo.

The purpose of this expo and exhibition is for business people to have first-hand interactions with manufacturers and to see the quality of Pakistani products.

As regards to payment issue, the whole point of the event is also to identify some of these challenges that our business people are facing.
